Surface Enhancing Skin Treatments
What causes facial ageing?
Facial ageing has many contributing factors – the loss of collagen, loss of hyaluronic acid, thinning skin all cause changes to facial structure. Lines and wrinkles start to form as part of the facial ageing process; this can also be evident on other areas of the body, especially the neck and décolletage.
There are 3 main areas that play a significant part
in the progression of aging skin...
UV Light Exposure
Ultraviolet radiation is the major cause for ageing skin and a catalyst for the onset of wrinkles. UV light causes wrinkles by breaking down collagen and elastin fibres, which lie in the deeper layer of skin and support good structure.
Genetic Ageing
Skin ageing is a natural process and caused by changes to cell structure. There is less production of the proteins collagen and elastin, which protects against and restores damage.
Environmental Factors
Pollution- including smoking, poor sleep and high levels of stress, can speed up the aging process, causing lines and wrinkles to start to develop earlier in life. Skin regeneration is a continuous process and forms new collagen; however, the above factors has been found to slow down the production of new collagen and evidence that the stress hormone, cortisone, has been found to breakdown collagen and elastin.
